Z-Wave Technology

Z-Wave is a type of wireless communication used to connect smart home devices like smart locks, lights, and thermostats. It allows these devices to “talk” to each other and to your home security system without needing Wi-Fi.

Z-Wave uses low-energy radio waves to send information between your smart devices and your security hub. It creates what’s called a “mesh network,” which means each device helps pass the signal along to others, making the connection stronger and more reliable, even across larger homes.

It’s usually a quick process:

  • Go into settings, select add device, select “Z-Wave”, and follow the prompts.
  • Follow the manufacturer's settings to place the Z-Wave device in pairing mode.
  • The panel will detect the device and connect it, just like adding a new contact to your phone.
  • No Ethernet cords, no Wi-Fi passwords, it’s simple, wireless, and secure.

Nope! Z-Wave doesn’t use Wi-Fi to communicate between devices. However, your security panel may still use Wi-Fi to connect to your app or monitoring service.
